Toto’s hardscape line in North America centers on the Toto Paver System and the commercial-grade Toto Permeable Series, both of which use a proprietary interlock geometry that differs from standard Belgard or Techo-Bloc patterns by about 3/16 inch in the locking shoulder. If your driveway was installed between 2015 and 2022, check the paver edge for a small “T” stamp or a date code molded into the raised surface - these indicate the original OEM spec.

The critical compatibility gotcha: Toto’s early permeable series (pre-2019) used a 60mm thickness that looks identical to the current 80mm residential spec from the top face. Measure vertically at a paver edge; if you get 2 3/8 inches, you’ve got the older series, and the bedding depth calculation changes. We stock both the 60mm and 80mm edge restraints, plus the corresponding bedding screed rails. Aftermarket equivalents from Unilock and Anchor exist, but the interlock tolerance is looser - fine for a patio, but on a West Palm Beach driveway taking daily vehicle load, that 3/16-inch gap translates to joint sand washout within 18 months. • Pavers rock or sink when you step on them. The bedding sand layer underneath has eroded or compacted unevenly, often from water running off a roof downspout that wasn’t properly piped away. • Edge pavers tilting outward or separating from the field. The edge restraint - plastic, aluminum, or concrete - has failed or been undermined. • Standing water 30 minutes after rain ends. The permeable joint or bedding layer is clogged with sediment, or the base was never pitched correctly. On Toto permeable installations, this also indicates the 6-inch stone reservoir below may be contaminated with fines and needs extraction.

Here’s what you can safely check yourself: verify the downspout drainage isn’t dumping onto the driveway, look for the Toto stamp or date code to identify your series, and photograph any efflorescence or joint gaps for reference. What goes wrong fast: lifting pavers without releasing the edge restraint first snaps the plastic spikes or bends aluminum rails; re-bedding without a screed rail produces waves that telegraph through in weeks; and polymeric sand applied to damp pavers cures into clumps that never lock properly.
